SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University junior
Lauren Pettis was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday morning by the league office.
Shippensburg posted double-digit victories this past weekend over Virginia Union and Bowie State, two teams that qualified for the 2020 NCAA Tournament. SU's defense limited both teams below 40-percent shooting from the field.
Pettis had 15 rebounds (7.5 rebounds per game) and blocked six shots (three in both games) in addition to picking up four steals during the 2-0 weekend. She was a team-high +16 against Virginia Union and a team-high +21 against Bowie State, meaning that the Raiders scored 37 points more than they allowed while she was on the floor. Additionally, Pettis drew a team-high nine fouls against Bowie State.
The opponents' starting forwards managed just 18 points over the two games, and SU's opponents totaled just 54 points in the paint in that span.
It is Pettis's first weekly honor, either as an Athlete or Defensive Athlete. She was named the PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week on March 4, 2019. It is the first time a Raider has been named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week since Kryshell Gordy on Feb. 17, 2020.
