SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Shippensburg University women's soccer team ended a 17-match losing streak against Pennsylvania Student Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division foe No. 20 West Chester on Saturday, defeating the Golden Rams 3-1 on Senior Day at David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-5-1, 3-3-1 PSAC East), playing at home for just the second time this season, began its historic senior day with senior
K.K. O'Donnell's goal in the fifth minute off an assist from sophomore
Maddie Stichter. The Raiders maintained the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 52nd minute, sophomore
Sofia Pittas sent a pass that led O'Donnell into a breakaway, and she finished with a wicked shot off the far post for her second goal of the match – marking her first-ever multi-goal game.
West Chester (5-1-1, 5-1-1) answered less than four minutes with a goal from Maddison Bowman off her own rebound, but in the 70th minute, freshman
Jenna Folmar put the lead back to two off Stitcher's career-high second assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kendra Barlow had nine saves in the win. WCU finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Saturday's win was momentous for multiple occasions. It was the first for the Raiders over the Golden Rams since Gayle Kuntzmann's overtime game-winner in a 1-0 win over then-No. 3-ranked West Chester on Sept. 6, 2007. It is the first time that SU has ever won by more than one goal over West Chester, and the win equaled SU's most goals ever scored in a match against West Chester – previously achieving the feat on Oct. 16, 1997 in a 3-2 win.
Shippensburg will return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Mansfield at David See Field.
