The Shippensburg University women's swimming team opened the 2021-22 season Friday with a tri-meet at West Chester in which the Raiders defeated Southern Connecticut State (143-133) but lost to the Golden Rams (64-212) in action held at Graham Natatorium.
 
The Raiders picked up nine Top 3 finishes in the meet.
 
SU opened with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as sophomore Sammy Taylor, freshman Lauren Croll, senior Tomomi Nakano and senior Madison Breiner posted a time of 1:54.69.
 
The meet concluded with Breiner, Croll, freshman Gracie Wetzel and Taylor posting a third-place time of 3:50.65 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
 
Having a full season once again means the return of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. The Raiders achieved three conference cuts in the opener. Croll placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming 1:09.87, and also placed third in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming 25.50 seconds. Nakano placed third in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming 1:02.33.
 
Other swims included sophomore Alyssa Tomb placing third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:39.76 and sophomore Michaela Hersh placing third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:18.89.
 
Shippensburg returns to action October 13 against IUP.
