RECAP: Wrestling Finishes Ninth at SR1 Championships; Reed Advances to Nationals

SU has now had a Division II national qualifier for 18 consecutive seasons

2/29/2020 9:04:00 PM

The Shippensburg University wrestling team finished ninth at the 2020 Super Region 1 Championships on Saturday, with redshirt-junior DeAndre Reed placing third at 149 pounds to extend SU's streak to 18 consecutive years with a Division II National Championships qualifier.

Shippensburg finished the day with five place-winners. In addition to Reed's national qualifier, sophomore Colton Babcock finished fifth at 174 pounds, sophomore Matt Milbrand finished sixth at 141, redshirt-junior Alexi Castro finished sixth at 197, and senior Derek Berberick took sixth at 285.

Reed's journey to the NCAA National Championships was a hard-fought venture through wrestlebacks, and culminated with a victory over a wrestler who had previously defeated him earlier in the day and twice overall this season entering the third-place match.

American International's Joel Morth, who defeated Reed by a 4-3 decision on Feb. 8, notched a 3-1 decision in Saturday's opener to put Reed into wrestlebacks after one match. Undaunted, Reed posted a 6-2 win over Millersville's Elijah Tuckey and an 8-3 decision over Seton Hill's Austin Shaw.

That set up a third match against with Morth, and it was Reed who won a 3-1 decision to earn his first career trip to the national championships. With 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Reed was credited a takedown after a danger call to achieve the momentous victory.

Babcock dropped a 4-1 decision in his opening match to Seton Hill's Brandon Matthews. He responded by pinning Kutztown's Anthony Emig in 3:53, but then dropped a 12-9 decision to Gannon's Luigi Yates. Babcock nearly came back after yielding a pair of four-point near falls in the first period – he had a first-period reversal out of the second near fall and scored a pair of takedowns in the third period but could not overcome the early deficit.

In his fifth-place match, Babcock scored a 17-7 major decision over Mercyhurst's Kevin Holman – a wrestler who had pinned Babcock earlier this season. Babcock finishes an impressive sophomore season with a 12-13 record that includes a team-high nine victories by fall.

Milbrand won twice in wrestlebacks at 141 pounds, including a 40-second pin of American International's Raul Mateo, but was bested on two occasions by Gannon's Nick Young. Milbrand finishes his sophomore season with a 10-15 record.

Castro won a wrestle-back match over ESU's Sczar Charles to earn sixth place at 197 pounds. He finishes his redshirt-junior with an 11-8 record.

Berberick went to the wire in three of his heavyweight matches – opening with a 5-2 tiebreaker 2 decision over Seton Hill's Jake Beistel. He then went toe-to-toe with Mercyhurst's Jake Robb but lost a 2-0 decision, with Robb winning on the strength of a riding-time point and a third-period escape. Berberick was then bested Pitt-Johnstown's Allan Beattie and Millersville's Josh Walls.

Berberick completes his senior season with a 13-9 record, and caps off a strong four-year career with a 56-46 record that includes 17 pins and seven major decisions and as a 2019 national qualifier.

Pat Duggan (157 pounds) and Drake Brenize (165 pounds) each won once in their respective weight classes.

Head coach Seth Bloomquist, in his 11th season as head coach and his 16th overall with the Raiders (including five years as an assistant), extends his school-record streak of consecutive years with a national qualifier by virtue of Reed's third-place finish. SU has had at least one national qualifier in all 16 seasons that Bloomquist has been associated with the team.

Reed will represent the Raiders at the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, to be held March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
