Raiders win streak is snapped; Castello records double-double

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 24 Shippensburg University men's basketball team could not solve the riddle of visiting East Stroudsburg on Saturday in a deliberately-paced, physical Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division affair that was claimed by the visiting Warriors, 66-63, from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (17-4, 13-2 PSAC) had its 10-game winning streak snapped despite overcoming a 14-point deficit in the second half. The Raiders trailed 44-30 with 16:30 remaining but re-gained the lead, 54-53, on a three-pointer by senior Daylon Carter with 8:12 remaining.

East Stroudsburg (12-8, 8-7) trailed by three points with 5:40 left but unfurled a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 64-60 lead. The score was 66-62 in ESU's favor with 2:28 remaining, but only one point was scored the rest of the way – an SU free throw with 55 seconds left. The Raiders missed three three-pointers in the final 10 seconds as they pursued a tie.

SU shot 46 percent from the field in the first half but committed nine turnovers and only got to the free-throw line twice in the first 20 minutes. The pace of the game was understandably slowed due to the Warrior press, and East Stroudsburg capitalized by shooting 41 percent overall and 81 percent (13-of-16) at the free-throw line. The Raiders were just 6-of-10 (60 percent) at the free-throw line.

Senior John Castello produced his third straight double-double, totaling 16 points and 11 rebounds. Castello has now tied Ken Miller (1962-66) for third place in school history with 984 career rebounds.

Sophomore Carlos Carter scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including multiple alley oop dunks. Junior Jake Biss had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Junior Kiyon Hardy had six points and five rebounds, while sophomore Luke Nedrow delivered five points, four rebounds and four assists.

Michal Weiss led the Warriors with 12 points, while Marc Rodriguez and Zach Sabol had 10 points. Seven Warriors had at least seven points on the day.

The PSAC announced after Saturday's league games that Shippensburg had clinched a berth in the conference tournament berth.

Shippensburg hosts West Chester at 8 p.m. Wednesday from Heiges Field House.
