John Castello scored a career-high 26 points on Saturday and achieved his fifth double-double of the season as the Shippensburg University men's basketball team maintained its hot shooting in an 88-70 victory at Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Thomas Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (16-3, 12-1 PSAC) was 12-of-23 (52 percent) from three-point range, marking its second-most three-pointers in a game this season, and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. Over the last three games, the Raiders are 36-of-38 (94.7 percent) at the free-throw line.
The difference came in the first half, as the Raiders unleashed a 23-11 run over the final seven minutes to take a 49-30 lead into halftime. SU committed just two turnovers in the first half while limiting Lock Haven (8-9, 5-8) to 38-percent shooting and forcing nine turnovers.
Shippensburg also finished with a 42-28 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds. SU scored a season-high 27 second-chance points and has now posted 20 or more second-chance points in three of the last four games.
Castello had 19 points by halftime, including 14 points during the decisive seven-minute run. He finished 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Castello finished with 10 rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes. It is the thirteenth 20-point game of his career and the 32nd double-double of his career.
Four Raiders finished in double figures. Junior
Jake Biss had 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore
Carlos Carter scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and redshirt-sophomore
Dom Sleva provided 12 points and eight rebounds.
Seven different Raiders made at least one three-pointer in the game. Castello and Biss combined for six, while Carter and Sleva combined to go 3-for-3 from long range. Sophomore
Luke Nedrow and junior
Kiyon Hardy each made their lone three-point attempts of the game, while senior
Daylon Carter snuck one in during the second half.
Nedrow finished with five points and five rebounds in 12 minutes.
Daylon Carter also had five points, while Hardy was held to three points in limited action because of foul trouble. Freshman
Ty Holsopple capped off SU's scoring from the field with a late jumper.
Senior
Lamar Talley, the only Raider starter without a three-pointer on the day, totaled a career-high five assists and once again provided valuable defense in a game-high 37 minutes. Talley had two points, two rebounds, and also a block.
The Bald Eagles got 14 points from Jesse McPherson along with 13 points from both Christian Kelly and Eli Washington. LHU started out 2-of-11 from the field in the first nine minutes but were within three points of the lead, 19-16, with 9:18 left in the first half. A 7-0 SU run over the next 70 seconds shifted momentum, and the Raiders led by as many as 22 points in the second half.
Shippensburg remains on the road for its next game, an 7:30 p.m. Wednesday matchup with Shepherd from the Butcher Athletic Center.
