RECAP: Softball Splits Road Doubleheader on Sunday at Pitt-Johnstown

SU wins Game 1, 7-3, but falls in Game 2, 3-2

The Shippensburg University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Pitt-Johnstown, winning Game 1 by a 7-3 score but dropping Game 2 by a 3-2 score in competition on an overcast day at the V.E. Erickson Complex.

Shippensburg (14-8) extended its winning streak to seven games with the Game 1 win, as a grand slam by sophomore Courtney Coy keyed a five-run fifth inning for the Raiders. SU trailed 3-0 entering the fifth before taking the lead, and later added single runs in the sixth and the seventh en route to the victory.

Pitt-Johnstown (8-6) ended the Raider streak in Game 2, as the Mountain Cats won in walk-off fashion via a wild pitch and RBI-single with two outs. UPJ trailed 2-1 entering the seventh before rallying with the two runs.

Freshman Tressa Kagarise and senior Taryn Wilson once again pitched complete games. Kagarise allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits in the opener, striking out six without walking a batter. Wilson allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits in the nightcap, striking out four and walking three.

In Game 1, freshman Morgan DeFeo had a pair of RBI-singles, and freshman Hannah Johnson hit an RBI-double. SU's runs in Game 2 came via an RBI-double from freshman Hannah Marsteller and an RBI-single from freshman Lacey Hunter.

Shippensburg totaled 21 hits on the day, but stranded 14 runners on base in the doubleheader – including eight in Game 2. The Raiders totaled six extra-base hits, walked four times, and struck out just three times on the day.

Freshman catcher Morgan Fetter continued a strong weekend at the plate by going 3-for-5 on Sunday with a double and two runs scored – reaching base four times overall. DeFeo, Marsteller and junior Kayla Bonawitz each had three hits on the day, while eight of SU's nine starters finished the doubleheader with multiple hits.

UP NEXT: Saturday, 1 p.m. at West Chester (DH) (PSAC East opener).
