RECAP: Women’s Basketball Drops Season Finale at Bloomsburg, 68-63

Jones scores 22 points in finale; finishes season with 690 points

Sophomore Ariel Jones broke the Shippensburg University women's basketball team's single-season record for points in Saturday's season finale, but the Raiders could not hold on at Bloomsburg, dropping a 68-63 decision to the Huskies in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Nelson Field House.

Shippensburg (12-16, 8-12 PSAC) was eliminated from the PSAC playoff race with Saturday's loss; the Raiders needed a win and an East Stroudsburg loss to reach the postseason, but the Warriors posted a 21-point win at Millersville to obtain the No. 6 seed in the division.

Jones hit a three-pointer with 3:17 left in the first quarter to give her the SU single-season scoring record, passing Tracy Spencer's mark (670 points) set during the 1995-96 season. She finished with a game-high 22 points, ranking her fifth all-time in PSAC single-season history for scoring (690 points).

Freshman Aunbrielle Green scored 14 points in the first quarter to key a strong start for the Raiders; she finished with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and made 7-of-8 at the line, marking her best free-throw shooting game of the season. Green also had seven rebounds and two assists.

Freshman Lauren Mills finished with eight points, including 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Sophomore Kryshell Gordy managed just four points but had eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Freshman Lauren Pettis had four points, nine rebounds and equaled a career high with three blocks.

Shippensburg shot just 32 percent (17-of-53) from the field, but stayed in the game with a durable performance at the free-throw line. The Raiders were 27-of-35 (77 percent) at the free-throw line, including a 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) rate in the first half.

The Huskies finished with a 39-37 edge in rebounding, marking just the sixth time this season that the Raiders have lost the rebounding battle. SU did have 15 offensive rebounds on Saturday, which led to 12 second-chance points.

Bloomsburg (19-9, 14-6) clinched a first-round bye with Saturday's win, and finished the regular season with a 13-0 record at home. Taylor Montana posted a double-double for the second time against the Raiders this season, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Alyssa Mack, one of two BU seniors, scored 17 points and made 7-of-8 at the free-throw line.

Shippensburg closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 41-36 halftime lead. The Raiders led by nine points in the third quarter, but the Huskies countered with a 10-1 run to equal the score late in the frame. SU was tied 63-63 with Bloomsburg after a pair of Green free throws with 3:37 remaining, but the Raiders were held scoreless for the duration.
