SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got five hits Saturday from junior
Zack Zoller, including a walk-off, three-run homer in Game 1, to post a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Johnstown, 5-3 and 10-2, on a cold and windy day at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (7-9) cranked out 20 hits on the day and scored 13 of its 15 runs on the day in its final three at-bats of each game. SU also got a pair of strong starts; redshirt-sophomore
Noah Inch struck out six and scattered two earned runs over six innings in Game 1, while senior
Michael Hope equaled a career high with 11 strikeouts in six innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits.
Zoller had a career day, going for 5-for-8 with three extra-base hits and five RBIs. In Game 1, Zoller was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, two runs and four RBIs. With SU trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, and runners on first and third with one out, Zoller hit his first collegiate home run to deliver the Raiders a victory.
The Game 1 victory went to freshman
Jared Showalter, who pitched a scoreless top of the seventh while striking out two. Senior
Ty Painter reached base twice in Game 1, including a hit into the hole between shortstop and third base that prefaced Zoller's walk-off home run.
The Raiders trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning of Game 2 before scoring three in the fourth, another in the fifth, and six in the sixth to break the game open. Junior
Jack Jenkens (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) pitched the seventh in Game 2.
In Game 2, senior
Jack Goertzen was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs. Freshman
Anthony Vavaroutsos had an RBI-triple and an RBI-single, and sophomore
Logan Williamson hit a two-run double that for the Raiders on the board. Sophomore
Chase Zurawski was 2-for-3 with an RBI-single.
Overall on the day, senior
Tommy Baggett and junior
Jacob Pollock each had two hits, including a double. Baggett drove in a run in each game.
