RECAP: Men’s Basketball Survives Upset Bid From Mansfield in OT, 74-72

Kellem hits game-winning three in OT after Biss makes game-tying layup in regulation

The Shippensburg University men's basketball team survived a spirited upset bid from home-standing Mansfield on Saturday by making shots in the final three seconds of both regulation and overtime to squeak past the Mountaineers, 74-72, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Decker Gymnasium.

Shippensburg (20-6, 14-4 PSAC) never led at any point in regulation against Mansfield (4-23, 1-18), who shot 41 percent from both the field and from three-point range while using a rotation of just six players – the Mountaineers had a seventh player hit the floor for just three minutes.

Trailing by two points on the final possession of regulation, sophomore Jake Biss made a driving, acrobatic lay-up off the glass with 0.6 seconds left on the clock to force overtime.

In the madcap extra session, Shippensburg grabbed its first lead but it was wrestled away by Mansfield in the final 90 seconds. SU got a three-point play from senior Antonio Kellem to take a three-point lead with 29 seconds remaining, but the Mountaineers countered with a quick lay-up and then a pair of free throws after a Raider turnover on the ensuing in-bounds pass.

Trailing by one point, Biss found Kellem open for the go-ahead, game-winning three-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Raiders the win. Mansfield's desperation heave at the horn went for naught.

Biss finished with a game-high 22 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the field. He added three assists. Kellem ended up with 21 points, including four three-pointers, to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

Junior John Castello posted his 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 6-of-13 shooting. Off the bench, redshirt-freshman Dom Sleva had seven points and 10 rebounds.

With the victory, Shippensburg joins IUP as the only two PSAC men's basketball teams to achieve 20 wins in each of the last four seasons (2016-19). Kutztown is the only other school who could join the Raiders and the Crimson Hawks; the Golden Bears would need a playoff run this season to reach the 20-win mark.

Prior to its current stretch of four consecutive 20-win seasons, SU had achieved just two 20-win seasons in its history.

Shippensburg will honor Kellem and Manny Span on Senior Night this coming Wednesday.

UP NEXT: Wednesday, 8 p.m. vs. West Chester.
