RECAP: Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight, 79-70 at West Chester

SU out-scores Golden Rams 25-15 in fourth quarter; Jones leads with 31 points

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team out-scored West Chester by 10 points in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon to win its season-best fourth straight game, claimed a 79-70 road victory over the Golden Rams in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Hollinger Field House.

Shippensburg (10-10, 6-6 PSAC) and West Chester (9-11, 5-7) were within one point of each other at the end of each of the first three quarters, as Saturday's five ties and 10 lead changes were the most of each in a game for the Raiders this season. SU finished with a 25-15 margin over the final 10 minutes, including a 12-5 run over the final 4:47 to close the game.

Sophomore Ariel Jones led all players with 31 points, making 16-of-18 at the free-throw line and also 3-of-8 from three-point range, to go along with five assists. It marked sixth time this season that Jones made 10 or more free throws in a game, and the seventh time this season (12th time in her career) that she exceeded 30 points in a game.

Freshman Aunbrielle Green was strong in the post with 17 points and eight rebounds, including 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. Fellow freshman Lauren Mills added nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Kryshell Gordy scored eight points, grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds (including seven offensive rebounds), and equaled a career high with seven assists. Gordy's 18 rebounds equals the single-game high by a Raider this season (Lauren Pettis, 18 vs. Seton Hill).

Freshman Margarita Kilpatrick equaled a career high with three three-pointers, shooting 3-of-5 from three-point range and finished with nine points. Freshman Lauren Pettis added five points and four rebounds.

SU posted a season high in assists (18) for the second straight game. Also for the second straight game, and for the second time this season, the Raiders posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (18 assists, 17 turnovers).

Shippensburg's defense kept West Chester's three-point shooting in check, as the Golden Rams finished the game making just one of their final 18 attempts from long range and overall were just 3-of-22 (14 percent) from distance. SU was 7-of-17 (41 percent) from three-point range, finishing one shy of its single-game high for three-pointers.

Bucking the seasonal trend, the Raiders erupted in the first quarter by shooting 71 percent (10-of-14) from the field and totaling nine assists in the first 10 minutes of play. In the fourth quarter, SU closed by making 12-of-14 (86 percent) at the free-throw line and hitting all three of its three-point attempts.

West Chester got a double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds) from Madison Torresin and 14 points from Destiny Jefferson. Gabrielle Troisi added six points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Golden Rams.

The victory moved Shippensburg into sole possession of third place in the PSAC Eastern Division – two games behind second-place Kutztown and three games behind division-leading Bloomsburg. West Chester now slots in fourth place with Lock Haven.

UP NEXT: Wednesday, 6 p.m. vs. Bloomsburg.
