RECAP: Women’s Basketball Snaps Skid With Road Win at Lock Haven, 77-69

Jones scores 22 to lead four in double figures; Green adds 17 for SU

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team out-scored host Lock Haven by a 15-point margin in the third quarter on Wednesday night to rally and snap a four-game losing streak, defeating the Bald Eagles 77-69 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Thomas Fieldhouse.
 
Shippensburg (7-10, 4-6 PSAC) shot 59 percent from the field in the third quarter and established its largest lead of the game at 17 points, 54-37, just 12 seconds before the start of the fourth quarter. Lock Haven (8-8, 4-6) hit 10 field goals in the fourth quarter, shooting 48 percent over the final 10 minutes, to get as close as five points of the lead down the stretch.
 
The Raiders clinched the game with strong free-throw shooting, making 17-of-20 (85 percent) at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and 26-of-33 (79 percent) overall for the game.
 
In the pivotal third quarter, Shippensburg committed just three turnovers. The Raiders committed eight turnovers in the second half compared to 11 in the first half, and finished the game out-scoring the Bald Eagles 18-17 in points off turnovers. SU's 16 assists were one off a season high.
 
Sophomore Ariel Jones led four Raiders in double figures with 22 points; she also grabbed nine rebounds and equaled a career high with six assists. Jones made a career-high 15 free throws on 16 attempts, including each of her final 13 attempts at the free-throw line that came in the last 6:44 of the contest.
 
Wednesday marked the fourth time this season and the ninth time in her career that Jones has made at least 10 free throws in a game. Her 135 free throws and 164 free-throw attempts are second in the nation behind UPJ's Gabrielle Smith. Jones' nine rebounds marked the sixth time in the last eight games that Jones has finished with seven or more rebounds.
 
Freshman Lauren Mills scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half, finishing just one shy of her career high in scoring. She also had five rebounds and two steals. Mills made a career-high five free throws on eight attempts and hit a three-pointer as well.
 
Freshman Aunbrielle Green finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 3-of-5 at the free-throw line. Green added six rebounds and equaled a career high with three assists. It was the 10th game this season that Green has finished in double figures.
 
Off the bench, freshman Margarita Kilpatrick scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting, including a career-best 3-of-3 from three-point range. Kilpatrick is now 5-of-7 from three-point range over the last two games.
 
Sophomore Kryshell Gordy finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Freshman Lauren Pettis had two points and added six rebounds.

The Raider defense limited Lock Haven to 4-of-25 (16 percent) shooting from three-point range, including a stretch where the Bald Eagles missed 17-of-18 attempts in the contest. 
 
Shippensburg trailed by as many as 12 points late in the first quarter but got back into the game by holding the Bald Eagles to just four points over a six-minute span of the second quarter. SU closed the second quarter with a 6-0 run over the final 2:37 to even the score at the intermission, 26-26. Overall, the Raiders out-scored the Bald Eagles by a 50-23 margin in the middle of the game to flip a 16-4 deficit into a 54-37 lead.
