RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey Shuts Out Southern Connecticut, 5-0

SU gets four goals from Petrantonio in Saturday’s win

Sophomore Jazmin Petrantonio scored a career-high four goals Saturday to propel the No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team to a 5-0 victory at Southern Connecticut State in the first of two weekend matches in New England.

Shippensburg (2-0) posted a 31-4 advantage in shots and an 11-1 advantage in corners.

Petrantonio's four-goal game is the first by a Raider since Kristina Taylor achieved the feat against Southern Connecticut on Sept. 4, 2011. Her fellow countrywoman, freshman Valen Alonso added the fifth Raider tally.

SU peppered SCSU goalkeeper Briana Craft with 16 shots in the first period, half of them landing on goal. Petrantonio took six of those shots and found the back of the net twice. Her first goal of the season came in the eighth minute. She sent a reverse chip through to the right side of the net. Her second goal came on a direct shot from the opposite side.

Freshman Jenna Sluymer had a prime opportunity in the first half, as a shot from freshman Adrienne McGarrigle went wide of Craft, leaving the cage completely open. SCSU's Megan Habakangas was there, however, to make a sterling defensive save.

With just 45 seconds to play in the first half, SCSU took its first shots of the game. Natalia Prukalski took one shot wide, then sent another toward the corner of the cage. Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Ally Mooney made the diving save to prevent an Owl goal. Mooney made two saves in the win.

Petrantonio scored another pair of goals in the second half. Three minutes after the second-half whistle, she pulled around a defender and sent a shot into the lower left side of the cage. She found the back of the net again on another direct shot from the left side in the 50th minute.

With less than five minutes remaining, on a penalty corner, Sluymer took the first shot, but Craft made a sliding save. The ball got loose, and Alonso was able to collect the rebound and take a shot at the wide-open cage for her first collegiate goal.

Saturday's win marked the sixth solo shutout of Mooney's career. It is SU's first shutout since last season's 8-0 victory over SCSU.

UP NEXT: Sunday vs. Saint Michael's, 11 AM (at Southern Connecticut)
