MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Dustin Sleva became the all-time scoring leader in Shippensburg University men's basketball history on Wednesday night, scoring 27 points, but the Raiders were upset on the road by Millersville, 87-84, in a tense Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Pucillo Gymnasium.
Shippensburg (17-4, 13-3 PSAC) got the historic performance from Sleva, who needed 23 points entering Wednesday night to move past SU Hall of Famer and current assistant coach
Chuck Davis (1,825 points) on the all-time SU scoring list. Sleva had 21 points at the half, and made the record breaker on a hook shot with 17:11 remaining in the second half.
Sleva finished with his 51st career double-double, totaling 11 rebounds to go along with the 27 points. He also had four assists and two blocks, making 4-of-5 from three-point range and 8-of-14 overall.
Sophomore
John Castello totaled a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and totaled nine rebounds in a splendid performance. Castello played all 40 minutes for the Raiders on the night.
Senior
Justin McCarthur had 11 points and five assists, while sophomore
Na'Quan Council scored 10 points off the bench.
Millersville (9-15, 7-11 PSAC) blitzed the Raiders in the opening half, making 8-of-9 from three-point range to start the game and hitting 12 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play. The Marauders ran out to a 55-45 lead at the half, finished with 14 three-pointers in the game, and shot 55.6 percent from the field to claim the victory.
The Marauders got 25 points from Marcus Adkison, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career on the night. Adkison was 7-of-8 from three-point range. Jordan Greene had 21 points.
After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Raiders scratched and clawed their way back to tie the score, 79-79, with 4:20 remaining. The Marauders countered with a bucket on the next possession, however, and SU could not find an equalizer the rest of the way.
