Men’s Basketball Uses Second-Half Run to Pull Away at Cheyney, 81-65

SU hits 11 three-pointers, including career-high five from Conner

CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team opened the second half on a 15-2 run Wednesday to pull away from a hot-shooting Cheyney squad, claiming an 81-65 victory over the Wolves in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Cope Hall.
 
Shippensburg (19-5, 15-4 PSAC) hit 11 three-pointers in the contest – including seven in the second half – while shooting 46 percent in each frame. SU also continued its efficiency at the free-throw line, shooting 14-of-16 (87 percent).
 
Cheyney (2-21, 2-17) trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but used an 8-0 run late in the frame to get within four points of the Raiders, 36-32, just 3:37 before halftime. SU scored the final five points of the half to lead by nine at the intermission before beginning the 15-2 run coming out of the break.
 
Senior Dustin Sleva posted his eighth straight double-double and the 54th of his career with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Sleva added three assists and two steals. Sophomore John Castello had 13 points and nine rebounds, helping the Raiders post a +10 rebound margin.
 
Senior Clay Conner hit a career-high five three-pointers Wednesday, finishing with 18 points (one shy of a career high). Conner was 5-of-9 from the field (5-of-8 from three-point range) and added five assists in the game.
 
Senior Justin McCarthur scored 13 points and handed out six assists, while junior Antonio Kellem added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.
 
Shippensburg hosts Mansfield at 3 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House.
