SU hits 11 three-pointers but drops first game of the season

The Shippensburg University men's basketball team hit 11 three-pointers on Wednesday night but could not come away with a victory on the road at Bowie State, dropping a hard-fought 74-70 decision to the Bulldogs in a non-conference clash from A.C. Jordan Arena.

Shippensburg (8-1) and Bowie State (4-5) each led for almost an equal amount of time in the game – 17:56 for the Raiders and 17:53 for the Bulldogs. After leading most of the first half, SU trailed by three at the intermission before grabbing a four-point advantage with 13:29 left after an 11-2 run. Bowie then re-took the lead with 10:44 remaining and would not trail the rest of the way, leading by as many as nine points down the stretch.

The Raiders actually shot better from three-point range Wednesday (36.7 percent) than it did overall (36.2 percent). Senior Antonio Kellem and junior Lamar Talley each hit three three-pointers in the second half, while junior John Castello contributed a pair in the first half.

Castello led the Raiders with 22 points, scoring 16 of those points in the first half. Kellem, who was limited to three minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, finished with 11 points. Sophomore Jake Biss had 12 points and four assists, while Talley finished with 11 points.

Redshirt-senior Manny Span had five points, six rebounds and three assists, while redshirt-freshman Dom Sleva contributed six points and six rebounds off the bench. Junior Daylon Carter provided three points, three rebounds and two assists.

Bowie won its fourth straight game on the strength of an 18-of-21 (86 percent) effort at the free-throw line and by shooting 51 percent on its two-point attempts. David Belle led all players with 24 points; he added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Saiquan Jamison had nine points and 11 rebounds, while Cameron Hayes scored 15 off the bench for the Bulldogs.
