SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team bounced back Sunday from a season-opening loss by recording its most rebounds in a game in four seasons, as the Raiders posted a convincing 85-53 victory over Wheeling Jesuit to conclude the 2018 Wolf's Bus Lines Classic held inside Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (1-1) got a game-high 31 points from Tournament MVP sophomore
Ariel Jones, who also totaled seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Jones was 8-of-11 at the free-throw line and posted seven or more rebounds for the fifth time in her career.
Sophomore
Kryshell Gordy notched her first double-double of the season and the fifth of her career; she totaled 14 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds. Gordy, also named to the All-Tournament Team, matched a career high with four blocks to go along with three assists and two steals.
In two career games against Wheeling Jesuit (1-1), Jones has totaled 55 points, while Gordy has recorded 26 points and 26 rebounds.
The second quarter was decisive for the Raiders, who out-scored the Cardinals 18-8 to take a 34-20 halftime lead. SU shot 66 percent (8-of-12) from the field in the frame while limiting the visitors to 19-percent shooting (3-of-16).
Shippensburg scored 51 points in the second half, shooting 50 percent in each of the final two quarters to even its record on the season.
Freshman
Lauren Mills reached double figures with 10 points, while fellow freshman
Aunbrielle Green added eight points and four rebounds on 4-of-5 shooting in just 15 minutes on the court. Freshman
Lauren Pettis scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Off the bench, freshmen
Nya Searight and
Margarita Kilpatrick each contributed eight points. Searight provided strong relief at forward, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and adding six rebounds. Kilpatrick hit two of SU's three three-pointers and added a pair of assists.
Freshman
Dah'Naija Barnes grabbed four rebounds and had a pair of assists in six minutes of action.
Shippensburg posted a 55-35 rebounding in advantage on Sunday; the 55 rebounds are the most for the Raiders since Dec. 17, 2014 (56 at Slippery Rock).
The visitors got four points, 12 rebounds, three assists and five steals from Chenelle Moore, who battled through 25 minutes of action after injuring her shoulder on Saturday. Moore and Khira Burton were named to the All-Tournament Team.
