SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Taylor Moore scored a golden goal three minutes into overtime on Wednesday to give the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-1-1, 1-1-0 PSAC) peppered Mansfield (0-1-1, 0-1-1) with scoring opportunities all game long, but fell behind just 24 seconds into the second half when the Mountaineers opened the scoring on a splendid passing play.
The Raiders answered in the 58th minute, benefiting off a restart from a foul, as sophomore
Isabella Weigel worked a clearing in the box to rifle home her second goal of the season and equal the score 1-1.
At the 2:53 mark of overtime, Moore created some space and finished a chance in the box after receiving a long feed from senior
Mallory Patterson. Moore's shot deflected off the goaltender's hand and trickled into the net for her first collegiate tally.
Shippensburg finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 16-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman
Delaney Shifflett was credited with two saves in goal to record the win.
Mansfield goalkeeper Rachel Fox made five saves in 50 minutes of action before an injury forced her to leave the game. SU got both of its goals against Mountaineer backup Dana DiCamillo, who finished with five saves as well.
It is the second straight year that Shippensburg has defeated Mansfield on an overtime golden goal. Last season,
Sharon Juarez scored 5:30 into overtime for a 3-2 Raider victory at Mansfield.
Shippensburg returns to action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when it travels to IUP for a conference showdown with the Crimson Hawks.
