SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team could not overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half on Sunday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from a sweltering David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-5-1, 1-4-0 PSAC) suffered its fourth one-goal loss of the season, rallying for a goal in the 66th minute by junior
Chloe Flemion, but the Raiders could not find the equalizer before the final horn.
Lock Haven (3-4-0, 3-4-0) scored twice in a 1:58 span to seize the momentum of the match in what proved to be the decisive stretch of play. Carly Spinuzza scored on a free kick in the 58th minute, and Haleigh Swam finished a mad scramble in the box just two minutes to transform a scoreless contest into a 2-0 Bald Eagle advantage.
Six minutes later, Flemion's work on attack resulted in her being the beneficiary of a passing play that ended with her first collegiate goal. Flemion forced a turnover on a nice challenge, and the carom eventually ended up going to senior
Kat Hartner. A nice run by Hartner ended with a cross that senior
Bailey Bzdak back-heeled onto a charging Flemion, who deposited the shot into the net.
The most important save of the game was made in the 37th minute by Lock Haven keeper Bree Hilty, who finished with five stops in the victory. An attempt by freshman
Taylor Moore hit the crossbar, and the follow-up by sophomore
Anna Middleton was rocketed toward the goal but Hilty made an excellent save at close range.
Redshirt-freshman keeper
Courtney Merwin made seven saves in goal for the Raiders before an injury during Lock Haven's second goal forced her to leave the game.
Freshman keeper
Delaney Shifflett made two saves in relief, including a marvelous stop on LHU's Leisha Noble in which she punched the ball above the crossbar as it rose toward the top of the frame.
Lock Haven posted an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, while the Raiders had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Conditions were not ideal – temperatures rose above 85 degrees with mostly sunny skies. The two teams were afforded breaks by the officials midway through each half to remain properly hydrated.
Shippensburg hosts East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m. Wednesday from David See Field.
