The Shippensburg University field hockey team scored three goals in the first half of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener Saturday to gain momentum and ultimately defeat home-standing Mansfield, 3-1, on an unseasonably warm fall evening from Van Norman Field.
Â
Shippensburg (6-1, 1-0 PSAC) had its offense clicking from the onset and finished with 27-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 20-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Raiders were credited with a 13-0 advantage in corners in the first half alone, a frame in which SU totaled 28 shots.
Â
Senior
Brooke Sheibley scored the opening goal 14 minutes in off an assist from senior
Kylie Huffman. Three minutes later, Sheibley assisted on a goal by freshman
Jazmin Petrantonio that made it 2-0 in favor of the Raiders.
Â
With just more than 11 minutes remaining before halftime, senior
Mary Spisak extended SU's lead to 3-0 with her fourth goal of the season off an assist from senior
Emily Barnard.
Â
Redshirt-junior
Ally Mooney was credited with four saves in the victory. The SU back lines also made two defensive saves, including one by Huffman.
Â
Shippensburg will renew acquaintances with No. 1 East Stroudsburg at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Robb Sports Complex. This meeting will count toward the PSAC standings. ESU handed the Raiders a 2-0 loss in East Stroudsburg back on September 6 in a game that did not count toward the league standings.
