JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Jake Kennedy set the all-time conference record for home runs in a riveting back-and-forth affair with Seton Hill on Saturday, but the Shippensburg University baseball team was eliminated from the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Baseball Championships with a 7-6 loss to the Griffins in 12 innings from Point Stadium.
Shippensburg (30-22-1) and Seton Hill (35-18) were tied 6-6 entering the ninth inning, a frame in which both teams put runners into scoring position with less than two outs but were ultimately unable to score. Sophomore closer
Michael Hope worked the Raiders out of several precarious situations in extra innings, but the Griffins plated an unearned run with a two-out jam single in the 12th to decide the game.
Kennedy's record-setting home run was a three-run shot on the 11th pitch of an at-bat in the sixth inning that transformed a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead for the Raiders. It was launched over the wall in center field, one-hopping off Johns Street before hitting the façade of the car dealership situated across the street.
It is the 45th career home run for Kennedy, who passes Kutztown's Shayne Houck (44, 2009-12) for the league's all-time mark. Through 53 games, Kennedy boasts single-season school records of 22 home runs and 71 RBIs, with the hope of improving upon those totals with a regional tournament appearance next week.
Kennedy was 3-for-4 with the home run, a walk and four RBIs, while sophomore
Cash Gladfelter reached base four times with a double, two singles and a walk. All five hitters at the top of the Raider order finished with multiple hits – senior
Ryan McMillen, junior
Nick Spangler and junior
Dalton Hoiles each went 2-for-6.
Junior
Grant Hoover got the start on the mound and threw well, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings of work. Freshman
Jacob Menders was the bridge to Hope – yielding three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Hope was marvelous out of the bullpen, throwing four innings for the longest relief outing of his career and his second-longest appearance as a Raider. He scattered five hits and two walks over his four-plus innings of work, striking out a season-high six batters. Hope ended the ninth, 10th and 11th innings with strikeouts to strand Seton Hill runners on base.
For the tournament, Gladfelter was 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored. He reached base in 13 of his 21 plate appearances, drawing two walks and being hit by a pitch. McMillen was 8-for-20 (.400) with three doubles and six runs scored, while Kennedy had five hits and three walks.
