Lacrosse Falls on Senior Day to Slippery Rock, 18-6

SU charges hard early in second half, but can’t make up deficit in season finale

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team scored three of the first four goals in the second half Saturday but could not sustain the momentum in an 18-6 loss to Slippery Rock on Senior Day at Robb Sports Complex.

SU (7-9, 3-9 PSAC) trailed 5-1 at the half, but scored three of the first four and four of the first six goals in the second half to cut The Rock deficit to 7-5 with 23:43 remaining. Unfortunately for SU, Slippery Rock, which clinched a PSAC playoff berth with the victory, scored the next 10 goals consecutively to pull away.

Senior Max Barkley, who was one of five seniors honored before the contest, had an outstanding game, totaling three goals, five draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior Ali Harclerode, senior Amanda Frank and junior Jordan Kengor each added a single goal for the Raiders.

Defensively, junior Makenzie Magnotta led the Raiders with five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Morgan Stone and sophomore Valerie Hertz each added two caused turnovers as well to the SU effort. Hertz finishes this season with 42 caused turnovers – one shy of the SU single-season school record.

Honored Saturday was an impressive group of seniors, including Barkley, Frank, Harclerode, senior Julia Wise and senior Annemarie Cericola.

Barkley finishes her career as the SU career record holder for draw controls with 265. She totaled 83 draw controls this season, the second-most in school history behind her 96 as a sophomore in 2015. Frank, who had 29 goals and a team-high 28 assists this season, finishes her time at SU with 147 points in 66 games.

Harclerode led the Raiders with a career-high 31 goals this season, giving her 65 for her career. Wise, who concludes her career with 48 starts, totaled at least 25 ground balls in all three of her seasons. Following another outstanding season, Cericola now has the No. 2-, No. 3- and No. 4-ranked single seasons in terms of season groundballs in SU history. Cericola finishes her career with 230 total groundballs – the most in SU history.

SU's seven wins this season – the first season under head coach Nicole Miller – were the most by the Raiders since 2014. The Raiders allowed just 190 goals this season – the fewest by an SU team since 2012.
