SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Grant Hoover hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday to clinch an incredible victory for the Shippensburg University baseball team over No. 4 Southern New Hampshire, 19-18, on a cold and windy day at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (2-6) and Southern New Hampshire (4-3) combined for 40 hits and 37 runs over 10 innings in a game that lasted more than four hours.
Six Raiders recorded multi-hit afternoons with senior
Ryan McMillen and junior
Dalton Hoiles leading the way with four hits each. Hoiles went 4-for-7 at the dish including the lone home run for the Raiders on the day. The junior from Spring Grove finished with a game-high five RBIs while scoring twice. McMillen finished the day 4-for-6 with four runs scored and a walk.
Hoover, sophomore
Jack Goertzen and sophomore
Cash Gladfelter all recorded three hits in the win. Goertzen finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three walks, reaching base six times on the day. Gladfelter provided power out of the No. 9 spot going 3-for-5 including a triple and a double while driving in four runs.
Senior
Jake Kennedy and sophomore
Drew Bene rounded out the multi-hit efforts. Kennedy scored the three runs, including the game winner in the 10th on Hoover's single. Bene scored three runs and notched three RBI's.
After the Penmen sent seven guys to the plate in the top of the first and recorded three runs, the Raiders responded with an impressive first frame of their own. The Raiders sent nine guys to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits to take a one-run lead early on.
SU would add another run in the bottom of the second on a RBI-groundout from junior
Nick Spangler.
Southern New Hampshire eventually regained the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 6-5 lead. The Penmen added three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 9-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Raiders would get one back on a no-doubt home run from Hoiles over the left-field fence. The home run was his second home run on the year.
Trailing 10-6, SU scored five runs in the sixth to re-take the lead, 11-10. The rally began with a bunt single from sophomore
Tommy Baggett, followed by an RBI-double from Gladfelter. Goertzen and Hoover each added two-out RBI singles.
The Penmen wasted no time with a response, however, scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh on four hits to take a 17-11 lead.
From there, the Raiders started to chip away. In the bottom of the seventh, SU got four runs back on a two-RBI single from Hoiles, a passed ball that scored Spangler, and a two-out RBI single from Hoover, that made the score 17-15.
Southern New Hampshire added a run in the top of the eighth, however, the Raiders again would find a way to respond.
In the bottom of the eighth, Shippensburg scored three runs to tie the game. Spangler drove in the first run with an RBI-groundout followed by a RBI-single from Hoiles that scored McMillen. The game-tying run came on a Penmen balk that scored Hoiles to tie the game at 18-18.
After a scoreless ninth, the game went to extras. Hoover moved to the mound from right field and recorded a scoreless tenth to set the stage for one final SU rally.
With Kennedy on first base and two outs, Goertzen worked his third walk of the day to put the winning run in scoring position. Hoover then delivered his walk-off single up the middle that scored Kennedy, sealing the win for the Raiders.
The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers on the afternoon. Junior
Andy Crum started and went 4.2 innings. The Raiders used four pitchers in relief including sophomore
Michael Hope, who pitched 2.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Shippensburg returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it will wrap up the series with the Penmen. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader.
