SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader with Bloomsburg Saturday for a second consecutive day as the Raiders defeated Bloomsburg 8-1 in Game 1 before dropping a 7-4 decision in Game 2 on a mild afternoon at Fairchild Field.
SU, which was hosting the Huskies Saturday due to unplayable conditions in Bloomsburg, served as the away team in both games.
Junior
Gabe Mosser was fabulous in Game 1, throwing a seven-inning complete game in which he limited Bloomsburg to one run on six scattered hits while striking out 10.
Sophomore
Cash Gladfelter reached in five of his six plate appearances Saturday as he was 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Senior
Jake Kennedy had a pair of hits on the day, including another home run – his sixth in SU's last six games.
Junior
Dalton Hoiles hit the Raiders' third home run of day – a grand slam in Game 2. Senior
Ryan McMillen and sophomore
Tommy Baggett each tallied two hits as well. Baggett also drove in a pair of runs.
The Raiders, who will play West Chester in PSAC East action next weekend, are one of six teams in the division that sit at 2-2 after the first series of conference play. The Raiders are back in action Tuesday as they face a familiar regional foe, traveling to Shepherd for a
doubleheader in Shepherdstown, W. Va. beginning at
1 p.m.
Game One
SU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when Baggett singled home sophomore
Drew Bene, who had walked earlier in the inning. Then with Gladfelter at the plate, Bloomsburg threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt, allowing junior
Nick Spangler to score from third base while Baggett moved to third. Gladfelter then made it a three-run inning with a single to right field.
The Raiders added a run in the third inning when Kennedy laced a no-doubter to left field for his PSAC-leading 10th home run of the season to make it 4-0, Raiders. The Huskies scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly, but SU responded with three more runs in the fourth as Gladfelter lined a homer over the right field fence. McMillen scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 7-1, SU.
Baggett added an RBI single to right field in the fifth inning to make it 8-1, Raiders. Meanwhile, Mosser was cruising. Of the final 16 batters Mosser faced, only two reached, with one reaching after swinging at a third strike that bounced away from home plate. Mosser threw 107 pitches in notching his fifth career complete game, lowering his season ERA to 3.96.
Game Two
In the second game it was Bloomsburg jumping out to the early lead as the Huskies scored one in the second inning before exploding for six runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Raiders, meanwhile, had chances as they left the bases loaded in the fifth inning and had two runners on with one out in the sixth, but again did not score. However, in the seventh inning the Raiders were finally able to chase Bloomsburg starter Ryuta Amaike as Gladfelter singled to open the frame. McMillen then reached via hit by pitch and junior
Grant Hoover walked to load the bases with no one out.
This time the Raiders converted as Hoiles launched a grand slam to left field to make it a three-run game. However, SU's next three hitters went in order to end the game.
Freshman
Zach Amisano and sophomore
Michael Hope both threw a single scoreless inning of relief in the loss for SU.
