Women’s Basketball Makes It 14-in-a-Row, Posting 69-53 Victory Over Lock Haven

SU matches second-longest winning streak in school history

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team got a season-high 22 points from senior Colleen Young on Wednesday night as the Raiders posted their 14th consecutive victory, dispatching Lock Haven by a 69-53 score in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (19-5, 14-4 PSAC) has matched its longest winning streak under 18th-year head coach Kristy Trn, equaling a 14-game run achieved during the 2000-01 season. It is the second-longest winning streak in school history (SU won 20 straight games in 1997-98), and Wednesday's result positions the Raiders to clinch a PSAC first-round bye with a victory on Saturday.

The Raiders trailed Lock Haven (7-14, 4-13) after one quarter, 19-17, but Shippensburg's defensive rally had the Bald Eagles sitting at just 39 points with less than nine minutes to play in regulation. SU out-scored the visitors 21-10 in the second quarter to post a nine-point halftime lead and would eventually lead by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Efficiency from SU's leading scorers was the noteworthy occasion Wednesday night. Young scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half, shooting 5-of-6 from the field after halftime. She was 6-of-10 overall with two three-pointers and eight free throws on the night.

Senior Logan Snyder made her first seven shots and finished 7-of-8 overall, scoring 17 points while tying a career high with nine rebounds. Graduate Stephanie Knauer made her first six shots, finishing 6-of-8 overall with 14 points.

Knauer is shooting 65.7 percent (134-of-204) from the field this season – a mark that currently is tied for the third most-accurate season in the history of the conference and the best by any league player in 24 years. SU's school record for single-season field-goal percentage is 63.6 percent (145-of-228) by Shelly Trego in 1991-92.

Senior Morgan Griffith attempted just three shots on the night but was integral to the cause with seven points, a team-high 10 rebounds and four assists – a total that ties a career high she has achieved 11 other times. Senior Lauren Gold had four points, six assists and two steals.

The Raiders did post a negative assist-to-turnover ratio for the first time since December 28, finishing Wednesday's game with 14 assists and 15 turnovers. SU dominated the glass, however, posting a 38-26 edge in rebounding. Lock Haven's Lysa Mealing had 16 of its 26 rebounds, posting a double-double by scoring 13 points.

Shippensburg hosts Mansfield at 1 p.m. Saturday from Heiges Field House. The team will hold its annual Alumni Game at 10 a.m. and conduct its "Play 4 Kay" event surrounding the game versus the Mountaineers. More information on the game can be accessed at www.shipraiders.com/play4kay. At halftime, the SU Field Hockey team will receive its 2016 NCAA National Championship rings in an on-court ceremony.
