Update: Chloe Collins and
Tara Bicko were voted to the All-Tournament Team. Full team below.
The Shippensburg University softball team dropped a 6-1 decision to host UNC-Pembroke on Sunday afternoon, completing a 4-1 weekend at the Braves' home tournament being held at LRA Field.
Shippensburg (4-1) got its lone run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI-single from freshman
Emily Zaring that plated junior
Chloe Collins.
It was all that the Raiders could muster against UNC-Pembroke (3-2)'s All-Region starter Abbey Walters, who threw a complete-game victory with four strikeouts and contributed four RBIs at the plate – including a decisive three-run home run in a four-run third inning for the Braves. Walters improved to 3-0 and has allowed just two runs in her three starts this season.
Shippensburg did manage six hits against Walters – as many as the senior starter had allowed in her first two starts of the season combined. SU left the bases loaded in the sixth inning as it attempted a late rally.
Collins took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) in two-plus innings. Sophomore
Nicole Smith allowed just one run on two hits in three solid innings of relief, recording five strikeouts. Freshman
Addy Szczerba pitched a scoreless sixth.
Shippensburg returns to action in two weeks, when it travels to Myrtle Beach for the Snowbird Softball Freeze Out. SU will play six games over three days during its time in South Carolina.
