No. 12 Men's Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Down Cheyney, 97-64

SU drains 12 second-half 3-pointers to pull away for 22nd win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 12 Shippensburg University men's basketball team outscored Cheyney by 22 points in the second half Saturday to coast to a 97-64 victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East contest at Heiges Field House.

SU (22-3, 18-3 PSAC) led by 11 points at halftime, but blew things open in the final 20 minutes by shooting 64.5 percent from the field and making 12 three-pointers. Seven different SU players made a three-pointer Saturday, including four from junior Justin McCarthur.

Senior Abe Massaley had an impressive Senior Day performance as he posted his third career double with 15 points and 10 assists. The 10 assists came up one shy of Massaley's career high as he played just 27 minutes in the lopsided win.

Junior Dustin Sleva also turned in a well-rounded stat line as he poured in 26 points (11-of-14 FG) while totaling 11 rebounds and issuing six assists. McCarthur scored 14 points while junior Clay Conner added 13 points, including three three-pointers.

SU led 40-20 before the Wolves finished the first half on a 9-0 run to make it an 11-point game at halftime. Cheyney then began the second half with a three-pointer before the Raiders used a 14-2 run to open up the game. Saturday marked the fifth time this season that SU has made at least 13 three-point field goals in a game. The Raiders also came up one assist shy of their team season high of 24 helpers.

Twelve different players made an appearance for SU Saturday, and all 12 players scored at least two points, including sophomore Antonio Kellem, who played 12 minutes in his first game back from injury after missing seven contests.

The Raiders honored Massaley and senior Chris Nwandu prior to Saturday's game. Massaley is one of 31 players in SU history to total 1,000 points. He's also second all-time in assists at SU with 466. Nwandu, who has played in 19 games with three starts this season, didn't appear in Saturday's game due to injury.

The Raiders finish their regular season schedule Wednesday with a trip to East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. from Koehler Field House.
