Men’s Basketball Puts Four in Double Figures, Cruises Past Clarion, 78-65

Sleva notches double-double; McCarthur adds 16 points in the win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team had four starters post double figures on Sunday as it never trailed en route to a 78-65 victory over Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
 
Shippensburg (6-2, 3-1 PSAC) led by as many as 24 points in the first half, shooting 50 percent from the field and scoring 16 points off of 15 Golden Eagle turnovers. SU started a 14-2 run beginning at the 12:59 mark of the first half to establish a 36-14 advantage just 5:19 before halftime.  
 
Senior Clay Conner was especially strong in the first half, making his first five shots and recording a team-high 12 points by the intermission to go along with four assists and zero turnovers. Conner finished with 15 points and six assists, shooting 6-of-9 from the field.
 
Senior Dustin Sleva posted his fourth straight double-double, totaling 21 points and 12 rebounds. Sleva was 6-of-9 from the field, 8-of-9 at the free-throw line, totaled four assists and two blocks. He also went over the 1,500-point plateau for his career, becoming the sixth player in school history to do so.  
 
Senior Justin McCarthur scored 16 points, making a pair of three-pointers, and handed out three assists. McCarthur has scored in double figures in all eight games this season.
 
Junior Antonio Kellem had 12 points, four assists and zero turnovers in 23 minutes, shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range.
 
Among the reserves, freshman Jake Biss added five points off the bench, while junior Manny Span had two points and five rebounds. Junior Joe Marshall scored on a put-back and totaled three rebounds.
 
Clarion (2-7, 0-4) was not able to trim its deficit to less than double digits in the second half. Mason Mraz led the visitors with 14 points off the bench; Israel Atkins had 12 points, and Cameron Grumley finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Eagles closed the game on an 8-0 run against the Raider reserves.
 
Shippensburg hosts California (Pa.) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
