The Shippensburg University field hockey team, the No. 3 national seed, will face East Stroudsburg, the No. 2 national seed, in the 2017 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Semifinals at 10 a.m. Friday from Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on the campus of Bellarmine University.
Â
The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II Field Hockey National Championship game at 11 a.m. Sunday and face either LIU Post or Millersville. That game will be hosted by the University of Louisville at Trager Stadium.
Â
All three of the remaining games of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships will be streamed live online; SU's games are linked above for both video and statistics.
Â
The matchup features the Top 2 teams from the Atlantic Region – three teams from the Atlantic and the East Region qualify for the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships. East Stroudsburg, by virtue of its No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Region, earned a bye into the semifinals.
Â
While each region earns three national qualifiers, this is the first year the NCAA committee has been tasked with seeding the national qualifiers one through six. Under the previous "true regional" setup, each region would have a maximum of two teams in the national semifinals. This year, three of the four teams in the semifinals are from the Atlantic Region via the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Â
SEMIFINALS
Shippensburg is in the national semifinals for the second consecutive year and the third time in the last five years. A victory on Friday would mark the fourth NCAA Championship game appearance in school history for the Raiders (2010, 2013, 2016).
Â
The last time Shippensburg played in Louisville was in 2010, defeating Bloomsburg in the national semifinals before falling to Massachusetts-Lowell in the national championship game. Both of those games were played at Louisville's Trager Stadium, the site of Sunday's finals.
Â
FACING THE WARRIORS
Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg have an outstanding rivalry that, most recently, has featured both teams ranking among the nation's best. The two teams have split this season's series, each winning on the other's home field (2-0 ESU on Sept. 6, 4-1 SU on Sept. 27).
Â
In NCAA Tournament history, Shippensburg won at East Stroudsburg in last year's NCAA Quarterfinals, 2-1. Back in 2009, SU hosted the Warriors and posted a 3-0 victory in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Â
In the last four regular-season meetings between the two teams, both squads have been ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the country per the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Poll.
