SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 3-seeded Shippensburg University field hockey team reeled off five unanswered goals on Saturday to defeat No. 6 seed Stonehill, 6-1, in an NCAA Division II Field Hockey Quarterfinal from a chilly but sunny Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (15-4) scored three times in the final 9:30 of the first half to flip a 1-1 contest into a 4-1 advantage at the intermission. The Raiders worked 12 first-half penalty corners, three of which resulted in goals. Overall, SU recorded a 27-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 20-6 margin in penalty corners.
Â
Senior
Emily Barnard scored twice, including a highlight-reel goal off a restart just outside the arc that made it 3-1 Raiders in the first half. Barnard now has 20 goals this season – the most by a Raider since Kristina Taylor had 23 in 2011.
Â
Freshman
Jazmin Petrantonio bookended the Raider scoresheet – opening the scoring at the 6:15 mark and later converting a penalty stroke with 12:54 to play after Barnard was tripped from behind on a breakaway.
Â
Seniors
Lauren Zengulis and
Madison Scarr also added tallies, with senior
Brooke Sheibley contributing two assists. Redshirt-junior
Ally Mooney made three saves for the victory.
Â
Stonehill (13-7) equaled the score at 1-1 just 81 seconds after the Raiders opened the scoring, as junior forward and two-time Northeast-10 Player of the Year Kacie Smith broke the NCAA Division II single-season scoring record with her 41st goal of the season. Skyhawk goalkeeper Sara Freedman had an exemplary effort despite yielding six goals – she finished with 19 saves.
Shippensburg improved to 8-10 in NCAA Tournament matches, and will now be making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Semifinals. Saturday's matchup was the first meeting between the two teams in 13 years (Oct. 24, 2004).
Â
The Raiders will now head to Louisville, Kentucky for next week's Final Four. SU will face East Stroudsburg at 10 a.m. Friday from Bellarmine University.
