CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team opened Saturday's game at Cheyney with a 24-7 lead after the first quarter of play and rode much of that early momentum to win its ninth straight game, 69-56, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Cope Hall.
Shippensburg (14-5, 9-4 PSAC) has now posted its second-longest winning streak in the last 16 years, extending the run Saturday by avenging a loss at the hands of the Wolves last season (64-62 in Cope Hall). The game was wildly physical, with the teams combining for 42 fouls and 63 free-throw attempts.
Graduate
Stephanie Knauer moved into SU's all-time Top 10 in scoring Saturday, passing Christa Cline (1491 points, 1997-2001). Knauer scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with four rebounds and two assists. She also went over 1,500 points, sitting at 1,501 for her career through the end of the weekend.
Senior
Logan Snyder scored a season-high 18 points, finishing two points shy of her career high on 5-of-7 shooting and 7-of-10 at the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Senior
Lauren Gold, who had been to the free-throw line just four times in the last six games, was 9-of-11 at the charity stripe and scored 16 points. Senior
Morgan Griffith had five points and 10 rebounds, while senior
Colleen Young had six points, five rebounds and four assists.
Off the bench, senior
Haley Scullion was solid with eight points and five rebounds while tying her career high with three blocks. Senior
Chanice Lee also added three points off the bench.
The Raiders led 41-24 at the half with 10 assists and just four turnovers, but finished with 15 assists compared to 14 turnovers. SU got to the free-throw line a season-high 41 times but made just 25 attempts (61 percent), while Cheyney was 14-of-22 (64 percent).
Cheyney (3-10, 3-10) got 11 points each from TaKayla Ellis and Shania Stamper and a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) from Marlon Herring. The Wolves shot just 33 percent, the lowest rate by a PSAC opponent this season.
Shippensburg returns to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown in a league-mandated crossover contest from Heiges Field House.
