CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Shippensburg men's basketball team used a quick start and consistent shooting Saturday to remain unbeaten with a 99-89 victory over Cheyney in a fast-paced Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East matchup at Cope Hall.
SU (17-0, 13-0 PSAC) jumped out to a 14-2 lead and led by as many as 18 points in the first half before the Wolves again made it a game. SU leading scorer, junior
Dustin Sleva, took a seat on the bench as he picked up his second foul with 5:11 remaining in the first half and SU up 17. Cheyney took advantage by going on a 12-2 run cut the SU lead to seven – the closest the Wolves would come for the rest of the afternoon. The Raiders, which led by 11 at halftime, never led by less than 10 in the second half.
Junior
Justin McCarthur continued his outstanding stretch of scoring by pocketing 24 points for a third consecutive game on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers, and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Sleva posted 21 points and 11 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, which ranks second in Division II men's basketball.
Senior
Abe Massaley was outstanding in distribution, handing out eight assists to go along with 16 points and three steals. The Raiders also received nine points from sophomore
Antonio Kellem.
The Raiders also received key contributions from their bench as the SU reserves added 26 points to the effort, led by eight from senior
Chris Nwandu. It was the sixth time this season that the Raiders have scored at least 90 points as SU shot 54.5 percent and knocked down 11 triples. SU also topped 30 free throw attempts for a sixth time this season, making 26.
Cheyney's 89 points were the most allowed by SU this season, and only the third instance in which an opponent has scored more than 80. The Wolves shot 49.8 percent from the field – the second-highest mark allowed by SU this season.
With the victory, SU assured that it will remain at least one of four unbeatens in all of Division II basketball until Wednesday, when the Raiders will host Pitt-Johnstown at 8 p.m. in a PSAC crossover matchup from Heiges Field House.
