Softball Faces Tough Competition Wednesday at NTC Spring Games

SU falls to Winona State, Saginaw Valley and St. Cloud State

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Shippensburg University softball team faced tough competition Wednesday at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games and was saddled with three losses, falling to No. 20 Winona State (8-0, six innings), Saginaw Valley State (7-6) and St. Cloud State (4-0).

Shippensburg (4-11) scrapped together 13 hits on the day, with the closest game coming in the middle with the Cardinals. SU took a 5-2 lead on Saginaw Valley after one inning of play, but SVSU countered with two runs in the second and third innings to re-claim the lead. The Raiders tied the score in the fourth inning, but the Cardinals scratched one more across for the win.

Sophomore Chloe Collins led the Raiders with three hits on the day. Collins also scored a run. Fellow sophomores Eryn Caragein and Anna Warfield each had a double, while freshman Courtney Cochran delivered a two-run single.

Junior Casey Thompson had solid relief in Game 2, throwing four innings out of the bullpen against Saginaw Valley. She allowed just two hits, one run and one walk against the Cardinals.

Freshman Taryn Wilson threw a complete game against St. Cloud State, allowing two earned runs in seven innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Shippensburg concludes its stay in Florida at 1 p.m. Thursday with a contest against Concordia (N.Y.) from the Hancock Park fields.
