Men’s Basketball Flashes Its Depth in Key Win Over East Stroudsburg, 74-69

Craig and McCarthur’s contributions off the bench fuel SU

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team boasted its depth Monday, using contributions throughout its roster to top East Stroudsburg, 74-69, in a pivotal Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (13-7, 10-6 PSAC) led by as many as 18 points in the second half before East Stroudsburg outscored SU 31-15 over a ten-minute span to cut the SU lead to two with 27 seconds remaining.

Senior Tony Ellis made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Raiders up three, and SU forced an ESU miss on the ensuing possession that was rebounded by sophomore Dustin Sleva. The sophomore forward was fouled, and made both free throws to secure Shippensburg's 13th win, tying the Raiders' win total from last season.

SU shot 52.8 percent from the floor (28-of-53) in the victory after shooting 38.9 percent in a loss to East Stroudsburg earlier this season. Ten different Raiders scored on the night as SU got 33 points from its bench.

On the defensive end, SU limited the PSAC's top shooting team in ESU to a season-low 37.3 percent shooting while forcing 16 turnovers.

Sophomore Justin McCarthur kept SU afloat as ESU made its run in the second half. McCarthur scored 13 of his team-high 16 points after halftime.

Junior Abe Massaley paired 11 points with a season-high eight assists and three steals. Sleva scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ellis was the third SU player to score 11 points Monday to go along with four rebounds.

Ellis had dunks on back-to-back possessions to open the second half, kicking off a 15-7 run that led SU to its 18-point advantage.

Senior David Craig provided huge minutes off the SU bench, posting career highs in points (nine) and rebounds (seven) in 19 minutes of action. Craig's thunderous two-hand slam, with a foul that led to a three-point play, kicked off a 10-0 run by SU in the first half.

Freshman Antonio Kellem followed Craig's dunk with a steal and a cram of his own. Senior A.J. Maun then hit a three-pointer, and Craig bookended the run with a smooth hook shot.

The Raiders are back in action Wednesday, when they host Mansfield with tip-off set for 8 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
