EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team was denied the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship on Sunday, as Millersville scored two second-half goals to defeat the Raiders, 2-1, at ESU's Whitenight Field.
Â
Shippensburg (17-3) converted its only shot on goal of the match into a score – taking a 1-0 lead less than four minutes in when sophomore
Brooke Zeiders took a carom off a long hit into the arc and slammed the ball into the net.
Â
The tally was similar to her goal earlier this season over the Marauders, as Zeiders tipped in a long hit in a 1-0 win at Millersville on what proved to be SU's only shot on goal of that game as well.
Â
Millersville (17-4), the national leader in penalty corners per game, worked five in the second half – and converted on two. With 20 minutes remaining, a directional hit that was sent wide of drawn out redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Ally Mooney was tipped in by Arianna Grays, tying the score at 1-1.
Â
With less than eight minutes remaining, Millersville worked another corner and earned a penalty stroke on the chance, as Taylor Parker made a move around a defender and was tripped as she worked toward a clear path to the goal. Margaret Thorwart lofted the stroke with velocity into the top right of the cage to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead with 7:13 to play.
Â
Shippensburg achieved a penalty corner with 4:43 remaining and applied steady pressure down the stretch, but could not muster a shot on goal. The Raiders did have two credited shots, one that went wide and another that was blocked.
Â
Mooney made four saves in goal for the Raiders. Millersville finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots and a 7-4 margin in penalty corners.
Â
Shippensburg now awaits the 2016 NCAA Field Hockey Championships selection show, which is scheduled to air at 3 p.m. on Monday at ncaa.com. SU is currently No. 2 in the Atlantic Region rankings; the Top 3 teams, as announced on Monday, will advance to the NCAA Field Hockey Championships.
