Football Secures Sixth Straight Winning Season With 43-9 Triumph at the Ville

SU gets 193 rushing yards from quarterbacks; Cole Chiappialle scores TDs three different ways

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team got 193 rushing yards from its two quarterbacks on Saturday and junior Cole Chiappialle scored touchdowns three different ways as the Red Raiders posted a convincing 43-9 triumph over Millersville on a windy day at the Biemesderfer.

Shippensburg (6-2, 4-1 PSAC East) secured its sixth straight winning season with Saturday's victory, marking the first time the Red Raiders have had such a prolonged run of success since an eight-year stretch from 1950-57. It was also SU's 13th consecutive victory over Millersville (1-7, 0-5).

Head Coach Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski – now 45-20 all-time at Shippensburg – is the first Red Raider coach in history to achieve six straight winning seasons, as the eight-year run in the 1950s was achieved by coaches Vint Rambo (1950-54) and Jack Roddick (1955-57). Ironically, Maciejewski tied Rambo on Saturday for third on SU's all-time head coaching wins list. Maciejewski's Red Raiders have broken, re-broken, tied, or re-written 152 school records through five-plus seasons.

The Red Raiders built a 22-6 lead after the first quarter, scoring three touchdowns and kicking a field goal while controlling the ball for 9:14 of the opening frame. SU scored on its first six possessions overall and led 36-9 at the intermission, adding a fourth-quarter touchdown for the final scoring margin.

For the sixth consecutive week, Shippensburg held its opponent scoreless after halftime. The Red Raiders have out-scored the opposition 114-10 in the second half this season, including 86-0 in the fourth quarter. A third-quarter interception by senior D.J. Burkey and a fourth-quarter defensive stand that resulted in a turnover on downs helped extend the streak into Week 9.

Shippensburg totaled a season-high 341 rushing yards, averaging 7.3 yards per carry. Redshirt-freshman Landon Archangelo ran for 104 yards on just six carries, marking the third straight week that an SU quarterback has both surpassed 100 yards in a game and been the team's leading rusher. Archangelo also completed 9-of-13 passes for 110 yards, including a nifty 18-yard touchdown pass to junior Jeff Gulyas.

Sophomore quarterback Chase Yocum, SU's leading rusher the last two weeks, ran seven times for 89 yards, including a 53-yard scamper in the first quarter that set up a touchdown run by senior Justin Pyle. In his three starts at quarterback, Yocum has rushed for 317 yards.

Yet arguably the star of the day was Chiappialle, who first scored a highlight-reel touchdown less than two minutes in after catching a short cross from Yocum, breaking three tackles, re-reversing the field and running 47 yards to paydirt. A downfield block by sophomore center Alec Petrillo helped secure the final path to the end zone for Chiappialle.

With two minutes left in the first quarter, Chiappialle fielded a punt on two bounces at his 21-yard line, split two defenders, and then sprinted straight through the Marauder special teams almost untouched for a 79-yard touchdown that put SU ahead 22-6. It is the second straight game that Chiappialle has had a punt-return touchdown, as he took a kick 58 yards to the house last week against Cheyney.

The only scoring of the fourth quarter was a 5-yard score by Chiappialle with 13:56 to play that came immediately after a 59-yard rush from Archangelo. Chiappialle ran 11 times for 81 yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

For the day, Chiappialle had 240 all-purpose yards – the most in one game by a Red Raider since Week 2 of the 2014 season (Blair Brooks, 260 at Edinboro). His 133 all-purpose yards per game average this season ranks ninth in the PSAC. He is currently the only player in the league with at least 200 yards in all four all-purpose categories: rushing, receiving, on kick returns and on punt returns.

Senior wide receiver Mike Brown came up big in several key situations, finishing with three catches (all for first downs) for 54 yards. His first catch was an 18-yard reception from Archangelo on a 3rd-and-11 play that helped set up a 32-yard field goal by junior Billy Deane. Later, Brown had a five-yard catch on a 3rd-and-4 that immediately preceded a 48-yard run by Archangelo.

Brown's biggest reception of the day was a 31-yard catch on a 4th-and-11 from midfield. Two plays later, Gulyas caught his touchdown from Archangelo, and SU led 36-9 in the final minute of the first half.

Shippensburg's defense, which entered the game ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II for rushing defense, held the Marauders to 31 yards on 27 carries (1.1 yards per rush). Six of SU's eight opponents this season have now rushed for less than 90 yards.

Senior Kevin Goldsmith led the Red Raiders with six tackles, while sophomore Dakota Thompson had five tackles, and two forced fumbles – one on a kickoff return and another on a sack.

Millersville's only score came directly after Thompson's forced fumble in the first quarter. After it had initially appeared Shippensburg recovered the fumble off a kickoff, officials deemed that Millersville had possession, and a timely screen pass beat the Red Raider blitz for a one-play, 59-yard score. It's the only touchdown allowed by Shippensburg in the last 10 quarters.

Shippensburg will play its final home game of the regular season next weekend, hosting Kutztown (5-3, 5-0) for Homecoming and Senior Day at 1 p.m. from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium. A Red Raider victory would put Shippensburg in control of its own destiny for the PSAC Eastern Division title, while a Golden Bear victory would clinch the PSAC Eastern Division Championship for the Golden Bears.
