SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Shippensburg University women's soccer team turned a fine defensive effort Tuesday into a 1-0 win over Bloomsburg in a hard-fought match played in a downpour at David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-4-1, 3-4-1 PSAC) improved to 4-0 at home this season by limiting Bloomsburg's quality chances. The Huskies outshot SU 13-5, including 6-2 in shots on goal, but came close to scoring only a couple times.
In the 13th minute, Bloomsburg's Rachel Yenney lined a shot toward the upper part of the goal. Shippensburg sophomore goalkeeper
Leah Roy jumped and knocked the shot over the crossbar for her most impressive of six saves on the afternoon.
SU also struggled to create chances in the undesirable conditions, but found a tally late in the first half. Freshman
Tori Mills set up senior
Haley Jones, who appeared to be sending a cross into the middle of the box from the right corner.
Instead Jones went directly towards the goal, and lofted it just over the outstretched hand of Bloomsburg goalkeeper, Devon Haviland, and in the goal. The score for Jones – the first of her career – turned out to be the game-winner after the Raiders continued to play tight defense throughout the second half.
Bloomsburg (4-4-1, 3-4-1) held a 10-2 shot count advantage in the second half, but Roy finished off her third shutout of the season.
Shippensburg will host Gannon Saturday at 5 p.m. in a PSAC matchup at David See Field.
