SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team got four hits, three stolen bases and three runs Thursday from senior
Tyler Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck), but visiting Lock Haven scored in each of its final at-bats to take both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader. SU fell 3-2 in eight innings and 7-5 on a windy and occasionally rainy afternoon at Robb Field.
Â
Shippensburg (8-9, 3-7 PSAC East), held to just two hits in the opener, took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1 after Thompson singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and came home on a fielder's choice – breaking late on a squibber to first base and beating the throw home.
Â
Lock Haven (6-10, 2-0), down to its last out, got an RBI-double from Sarah Schwalm on a ball that was slicing into right field and then bounced away from SU's oncoming outfielder. In the eighth, pitcher Rachel Mouillessaux homered on a 1-2 pitch with two outs for the decisive run. Mouillessaux was the winning pitcher in both games, allowing three hits in 10.1 innings on the day with nine strikeouts.
Â
SU rebounded with 11 hits in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and leading 3-1 through four. The Haven took a 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Raiders got two of their own in the bottom of the fifth to lead 5-4. The Lady Eagles tied it in the sixth, however, and got a two-run double in the seventh for the Game 2 win.
Â
Thompson scored both of SU's runs in the opener; she drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, was sacrificed to third base and then scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Jenny Peel. In Game 2, Thompson tripled to lead off and scored on a groundout by junior
Briana Giovenco.
Â
Senior
Taylor Weisman had three hits in Game 2, including a solo home run in the first and a double in the seventh. Junior
Taylor Pattillo had two singles and Giovenco doubled.
Â
Senior
Liz Parkins took the loss in the opener, allowing three runs in eight innings while striking out two. She walked just one batter. Senior
Makenzie Lynn pitched 4.1 innings in Game 2, with junior
Quincy Lewis entering in relief and Parkins returning to get the final two outs. Lewis was tagged with the loss, allowing two earned runs in two innings.
Â
Shippensburg is scheduled to play at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Kutztown, weather permitting.
