Spanos’ Grand Slam, Mosser’s Pitching Keys Baseball’s Split With East Stroudsburg

SU rallies in Game 2 for 4-2 win, ESU wins opener, 8-2

Senior Jimmy Spanos hit a two-out grand slam in Game 2 of a Monday-afternoon doubleheader and freshman Gabe Mosser spun a six-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Shippensburg University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division twinbill with East Stroudsburg, winning the nightcap 4-2 but dropping the opener 8-2 at Mitterling Field.

Shippensburg (11-15, 7-5 PSAC East) played on the road for the first time in 20 days Monday and got complete games from both Mosser and sophomore Mark Curtis, while junior shortstop Mike Marcinko had five hits and a walk in eight plate appearances on the day to improve his season batting average to .413.

Mosser yielded two runs (one earned) and three hits in the first inning of Game 2 but allowed just three hits the rest of the way, fanning nine for his second consecutive complete-game victory in divisional play.

With SU trailing 2-0 after four innings of Game 2 and looking to salvage a split, sophomore Ryan McMillen took one for the team to lead off the fifth inning but remained on first base with two outs after a pair of strikeouts. Marcinko singled and junior Austin Allison walked to set the stage for Spanos' grand slam – his 201st career hit and seventh career round tripper.

Freshman Nick Spangler had a hit in each game, including a Game 1 RBI-single. Spanos had a sacrifice fly in the opener, while Allison finished the day with two hits and a walk.

Curtis went the distance in the opener, striking out three. ESU scored six runs with two outs in the fifth inning of a 2-2 game, getting help from a wind-aided pop-up that turned into a two-run single, an error, and a three-run home run.

Shippensburg will go three days without playing a game, returning to action Friday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Kutztown at Fairchild Field.
