SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games with Lock Haven on Tuesday, winning the opener 8-2, and dropping the nightcap 10-8 on a warm, sunny and very windy afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (4-11, 1-3 PSAC) combined for 16 runs on 22 hits while Lock Haven (4-6, 3-1) scored 12 runs on 21 hits. SU served as the visiting team in both games despite playing on its home field, as the visiting Bald Eagles traveled to Shippensburg because its own Foundation Field was unplayable.
Sophomore
Jake Kennedy went a combined 3-for-6 with a grand slam, double, five RBIs, two runs and two walks. In four games against the Bald Eagles, Kennedy was 6-for-12 with seven RBIs.
Senior
Jimmy Spanos hit two doubles and finished 5-for-8 on the afternoon with three runs and one RBI.
Freshman
Dalton Hoiles was 2-for-4 in each game and finished the LHU series hitting 8-for-14 (.571 avg.).
A heavy wind blowing straight out to left field played a significant impact on Tuesday's games. SU and LHU combined for six home runs in the doubleheader and all six soared over the left field fence.
Six different Raiders recorded multiple hits on the day while Spanos, Kennedy, junior
Austin Allison and freshman
Nick Spangler finished with seven total bases each.
Shippensburg plays Wilmington (Del.) on Wednesday in a nine-inning contest beginning at 3 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
Game 1 Kennedy set the tone early by launching a grand slam over the left-field fence to put Shippensburg up by four runs with no outs in the top of the first as the Raiders emerged victorious in the opening game, 8-2.
Shippensburg scored four more runs in the second inning when Spangler homered, Allison brought home junior
Mike Marcinko on a round-tripper, and Hoiles singled to left-center field to score Spanos.
The early run support held true after sophomore
Mark Curtis threw six strong innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out five.
Marcinko finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs while Spanos went 3-for-4 with two runs.
Freshman
Grant Hoover pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Game 2 Shippensburg scored two runs in four different innings, however, Lock Haven scored multiple runs in each of its final four innings to hold off the Raiders, 10-8.
Entering the top of the seventh, Shippensburg trailed 10-6 but Spanos promptly opened the frame with a double to deep right field.
After Kennedy popped out to third base and Hoiles singled, senior
Cody Ezolt smashed a two-run double to right center field.
After a lineout, the Raiders were down to their final out with the tying run on the plate and Ezolt on second base.
Next up, Hoover sent a ground ball to the left side, a tough play for the shortstop who was barely able to glove the ball before tossing it to third where Ezolt was ruled out on a close play on the fielder's choice to end the game.
Seven different Raiders finished with at least one hit while six tallied one or more RBIs.
Allison tripled and scored a run while Spanos and Hoiles each went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
