The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used an outstanding shooting performance from the free throw line and timely defense Sunday to earn an impressive 75-69 road win over Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game at the Hammermill Center.
Shippensburg (4-1, 2-1 PSAC) bounced back nicely from a tough two-point loss Saturday to hand Gannon its first defeat of the season. SU limited Gannon to just 41.5 percent shooting from the field, including a 19.2 percent mark from three-point land. Gannon (4-1, 2-1) made just 5-of-26 three-point tries.
SU did much of its damage offensively from the free throw line, where it made 29-of-32 attempts (90.6 percent). Leading the way was junior
Lauren Gold, who made all 12 of her free throws. It is the fourth time in Gold's career that she was perfect from the line in a game where she shot at least 10 free throws.
Joining
Morgan Griffith was also effective from the line, making 10-of-10 attempts. Griffith was outstanding beyond her free throw shooting as well, racking up 24 points (7-13 FG) and 10 rebounds. The junior forward is averaging a double-double of 15 points and 11.8 rebounds per game through five games this season.
SU's biggest lead of the fourth quarter was nine, when two Gold free throws put the Raiders up 63-54. An 8-0 run by Gannon made it a one-point game, but the Raiders had a response.
Thanks to good ball movement, freshman
Gabriela Blackburn found Griffith on the right block, where she was able to step through and put home a layup. On the next SU possession, the Raiders patiently worked against the Gannon zone defense until junior
Colleen Young knocked down a crucial three-pointer from the left corner.
It was the only field goal of the game for Young, but gave SU a 68-62 lead with 3:40 remaining. Gannon never drew closer than three points the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Kristin McGeough provided big minutes off the bench, scoring nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Junior
Logan Snyder added nine points as well, making 4-of-5 field goal attempts. Snyder is shooting a scorching 73.5 percent from the field through five games.
The Raiders do not play again until December 1, when they welcome West Chester to Heiges Field House for a 6 p.m. start.
