CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 25-ranked Shippensburg University softball team split a pair of games on Sunday in its second day of competition at the NTC Spring Games, dropping a 7-1 decision to Northwood in its first loss of the season before beating Stonehill, 4-1, from the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
The Raiders (5-1) managed just three hits in the opener to Northwood (4-3) before taking advantage of some timely hits in the nightcap victory over Stonehill (2-1). Shippensburg, however, totaled 14 strikeouts on the day.
Junior starting pitchers
Liz Parkins and
Makenzie Lynn each totaled five strikeouts on the day. Parkins earned the victory in the nightcap as she gave up one run off seven hits in five innings of action.
Senior
Emily Estep earned her second save of the season with three strikeouts in a spotless two-inning relief effort in the second game. Freshman
Casey Thompson pitched two and one-third innings of relief in the opener with a pair of strikeouts.
Parkins gave herself some run support during a three-run third inning for SU in the second game. Parkins drove in a pair of runs with a double off the right-field wall that followed walks from sophomore catcher
Taylor Llewellyn and sophomore third baseman
Briana Giovenco. Junior first baseman
Maddie Justice then followed with an RBI single to right field to score Parkins.
Justice led off the sixth with a double to the gap in left center and later scored from third on an error from the Stonehill catcher throwing to second base in an attempt to nab senior second baseman
Rachel Shumway, who stole the bag.
Senior left fielder
Hilary Lyons drove in SU's lone run in the first game with an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the second inning.
The Raiders will resume play at NTC on Tuesday with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
