Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore right fielder Briana Giovenco knocked in the game's lone runs with a two-RBI double to left center in the top of the seventh on Saturday night as the Shippensburg University softball team won its opening game of the NTC Spring Games with a 2-0 victory over Wilmington from the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

Senior Emily Estep was dominant in the circle for the Raiders (4-0), allowing just two hits while striking out eight in a complete-game shutout. Estep did not walk a batter, as the two hits she gave up were the lone Wilmington (2-4) base runners on the night. It's the sixth time in her career that Estep has gone seven innings without walking a batter.

Giovenco also added a single in the fifth inning and reached base in three of her four plate appearances (a walk in the opening frame). Junior shortstop Taylor Weisman was the only other Raider with multiple hits as she singled to lead off the fourth and sixth innings.

Three of Shippensburg's seven hits came in the fourth as SU nearly broke the game open. Junior first baseman Maddie Justice followed up Weisman's single with one of her own. Another single courtesy of junior third baseman Liz Parkins with two outs loaded the bases before a fielder's choice ended the threat.

Shippensburg eventually got the runs it needed in the seventh beginning with a Parkins lead-off walk and a sacrifice bunt from sophomore catcher Taylor Llewellyn, who reached first on a throwing error by the Wilmington third baseman. The runners advanced to second and third after a sacrifice bunt from junior center fielder Tyler Thompson, setting up Giovenco's eventual game-winning hit.

The Raiders will play Northwood and Stonehill tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
