The Shippensburg University lacrosse team got hat tricks Tuesday from senior
Bennett Widlake and junior
Sheila Johnson but dropped a 16-7 decision at No. 15 Bloomsburg on a snowy afternoon at Sports Stadium.
Shippensburg (4-3, 1-1 PSAC) trailed by just two goals, 5-3, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half before Bloomsburg (4-2, 2-0 PSAC) countered with three goals before the intermission. The Huskies would lead by at least five goals for the remainder of the contest.
All three of Shippensburg's losses this season have been at the hands of nationally-ranked programs.
Widlake scored on three of her shots in the contest, scoring twice in the first half. Johnson scored twice in the second half. Junior
Courtney Kennedy scored Shippensburg's other goal and had two assists. Freshman
Annemarie Cericola also had an assist and one of SU's seven caused turnovers.
Shippensburg won the draw control battle, posting a 14-11 advantage, but lost the turnover margin, 14-8. Senior
Amanda Krok had a game-high five draw controls, while senior
Carly Ruberti came up with four in addition to a pair of groundballs.
Sophomore
Ally Frymoyer made six saves in the loss.
Bloomsburg, fresh off a defeat last week over reigning PSAC champion West Chester, scored eight goals in each period and got a game-high five goals from Aubrey Bossert. Julie Falk contributed four goals and four assists for the Huskies.
Shippensburg will host Seton Hill on Friday and Slippery Rock on Saturday both at 3 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex. At Saturday's game, SU will be holding its annual "Lax 4 Life" game – collecting donations for the national foundation that deals with adolescent and teen suicide prevention.
