TROUTVILLE, Va. – Senior
Emily Estep and junior
Makenzie Lynn threw complete-game shutouts on Sunday at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament, with Estep throwing her third career no-hitter and Lynn allowing just three hits as the No. 19 Shippensburg University softball team defeated Chowan (4-0) and Walsh (2-0) in games played at the Botetourt Softball Complex.
Shippensburg (14-2) won all six of its games this weekend at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament and has won 11 consecutive games at the tournament after winning all five last season. Over the last two years, SU has out-scored the opposition 76-16 in Virginia after posting just a 5-6 record at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in 2011-12.
In the opener, Estep retired the first 10 batters she faced, nine by strikeout, and yielded just three base runners overall – two by walk and one by error. It was her second career seven-inning no-hitter, as Estep blanked West Chester on Apr. 5, 2013 with an 11-strikeout effort. She also threw a five inning no-hitter last year in Salem against Edinboro.
Her 14 strikeouts are one short of her career high, as she struck out 15 against Millersville on Apr. 21, 2012. Chowan (4-19) got just one runner to second base in the game.
SU's production at the plate came courtesy of RBI-singles in the fifth inning by sophomore
Briana Giovenco and junior
Taylor Weisman and a two-run single in the sixth inning by senior
Hilary Lyons.
Junior
Tyler Thompson singled twice and stole two bases, scoring on Giovenco's single to put SU on the scoreboard. Giovenco went 2-for-3 with her RBI, a walk and two runs scored. The singles by Weisman and Lyons each came with two outs.
In SU's second game, the Raider rode the strong pitching of Lynn and got a pair of two-out hits in the sixth inning to score the only runs of the game. With the two teams having combined for just six hits entering the bottom of the sixth, Weisman doubled with two outs before junior
Maddie Justice smacked a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence to plate sophomore pinch runner
Courtney Kane and give the Raiders the lead.
Lynn was splendid and peppered the strike zone all day long. She threw 70 of her 89 pitches for strikes, fanning eight, in recording her seventh career shutout and her third career complete game in which she did not walk a batter. Only one opposing batter reached a three-ball count against Lynn.
After giving up a leadoff double, Lynn yielded just two other hits, both being bloops that managed to fall between fielders. She also had a strong defensive play in the fourth inning, running to cover third base on a bunt and tagging out the Cavalier base-runner who attempted to gain two bases on a sacrifice.
Lyons had two of SU's five hits against Walsh (9-7) and finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Giovenco also singled against Walsh and went 3-for-6 in Sunday's games.
In total, Estep and Lynn combined to allow just three hits in 14 shutout innings, striking out 22 batters. The Raiders have not allowed a run in 17 consecutive innings.
At the plate, Weisman extended her hitting streak to 14 games and has now reached base in 15 consecutive contests. In six games this weekend, Weisman had nine hits (four for extra bases) and seven RBIs.
Giovenco now boasts a seven-game hitting streak. She went 11-for-21 (.524) this weekend with two home runs, seven RBIs, eight runs and two stolen bases. Also this weekend, Thompson had seven hits and seven stolen bases while Lyons had six hits, three RBIs and four stolen bases.
Overall, Shippensburg had 57 hits in six Virginia games, including seven doubles and seven home runs, while hitting .341 as a team. The Raiders also committed just one error had 15 stolen bases.
Shippensburg will host Seton Hill, weather and conditions permitting, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from Robb Field.
