No. 19 Softball Continues Winning Ways With Victories Over Wheeling Jesuit, Davis & Elkins

SU cranks out 16 runs and 23 hits on Saturday in defeating the Cardinals (6-1) and the Senators (10-1)

TROUTVILLE, Va. – The No. 19 Shippensburg University softball team cranked out 16 runs and 23 hits on Saturday in posting a 6-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit and a 10-1 victory over Davis & Elkins at the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in games played at the Botetourt Softball Complex.

Shippensburg (12-2) has scored 33 runs and cranked out 43 hits in four games over the last two days, including six home runs and 13 extra-base hits. Sophomore Briana Giovenco and junior Taylor Weisman hit home runs for the second straight day, while freshman Jenny Peel slammed her first collegiate round tripper on Saturday as well.

Giovenco was 4-for-7 with three runs on Saturday while Weisman was 4-for-8 with a homer, triple and four RBIs. Peel was 3-for-6 with two walks.

Junior Liz Parkins threw her second complete game of the season in the victory over Wheeling Jesuit, scattering a run on five hits while striking out six. She was also 2-for-4 at the plate in the game.

Freshman Casey Thompson made her first collegiate start against Davis & Elkins and went 2.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Junior Makenzie Lynn entered in relief against the Senators and struck out the first six batters she faced, all swinging, en route to the victory. Lynn retired all 10 batters she faced.

SU held a 2-1 lead through five innings against Wheeling before scoring four runs in the sixth inning on a three-run double by senior Rachel Shumway and a pinch-hit RBI-single by sophomore Taylor Pattillo. Senior Hilary Lyons was 2-for-4 against the Cardinals with two stolen bases.

The Raiders led just 2-1 over Davis & Elkins through four innings before scoring two in the fifth on a Peel single and a Weisman groundout. SU then erupted for six runs in the sixth inning, scoring one on a double by senior Kirstin McClune, one each on an error and a wild pitch, and then three on Weisman's home run.

Weisman had four home runs in her first two seasons with Shippensburg and has now hit five this season in just 39 at-bats. She was 3-for-4 against Davis & Elkins and enters Sunday with a 12-game hitting streak and a .513 batting average.

Peel was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored against the Senators. She is 9-for-15 at the plate in her last five games.

Junior Tyler Thompson had a hit and a pair of stolen bases on Saturday while fellow junior Maddie Justice reached base four times (two hits, including a double, and two walks).

Shippensburg will play Chowan at 9 a.m. Sunday before facing Walsh (Ohio) at 11 a.m. from the Botetourt Softball Complex in Troutville.
