TROUTVILLE, Va. – The No. 19 Shippensburg University softball team dialed up 17 runs and 20 hits on a windy but sunny Friday at the annual West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament, slamming three home runs and slugging six extra-base hits as it shut out Fairmont State, 5-0, before routing Shepherd, 12-4 in six innings, at the Botetourt Softball Complex.
Shippensburg (10-2) got four hits each from sophomore
Briana Giovenco and junior
Tyler Thompson. Giovenco smacked a three-run homer, doubled, and finished the day with five RBIs and three runs scored. Thompson scored twice but also stole three bases, bringing her career total to 54 and moving her past Jill Mullan (52 SBs from 2008-11) to become SU's career record holder.
Junior
Taylor Weisman had three hits, including a two-run homer in the opener against Fairmont State, and extended her hitting streak to 10 games. Both Weisman and Giovenco have five multi-hit games through 12 contests this season.
Senior
Emily Estep threw her 10th career shutout in Friday's first game, blanking the Fighting Falcons while yielding just two walks and six hits in seven innings. Estep struck out three batters and has allowed just two earned runs through 35 innings this season.
Junior
Makenzie Lynn weathered a rough first inning in Game 2 against Shepherd, allowing a pair of home runs to fall behind 4-0, before allowing just four hits the rest of the way and blanking the Rams for the final five innings. Lynn walked three and struck out five but made a most memorable impression at the plate, slicing a three-run home run down the right-field line in the second inning that tied the score at 4-4.
The home run was just the fifth career hit for Lynn – who recorded her first career extra-base hit and first career RBIs with the round tripper.
Seven of SU's nine starters had at least one hit against Shepherd. Thompson was 3-for-4 while sophomore second baseman
Taylor Pattillo went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
Senior
Hilary Lyons scored two runs and stole her 10th base of the season, while senior
Rachel Shumway came off the bench and delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in SU's six-run third inning.
Freshman
Jenny Peel had a hit in each game, opening the scoring against Fairmont State with an RBI-double in the first inning that gave extended a streak of hits in five consecutive plate appearances. She added an RBI-groundout in Game 2 and is 7-for-12 at the plate this season.
Juniors
Liz Parkins and
Maddie Justice each added RBIs in Game 2. Parkins drew a bases-loaded walk to kick-start the six-run third inning before Justice delivered an RBI-single in the sixth.
The Raiders also played dependable defense, going without an error in each game. In Game 1, Pattillo made a slick play at second base – sliding to scoop up a grounder before throwing to an out-stretched Justice at first base to prevent two runs.
Shippensburg will play Wheeling Jesuit at 9 a.m. Saturday before facing Davis & Elkins at 11 a.m. from the Botetourt Softball Complex in Troutville.
