SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – In a spirited effort in its 2013-14 season finale on Wednesday night, the Shippensburg University men's basketball team put all five of its starters in double figures and produced a season-high in points in a 92-87 win over PSAC playoff-bound Millersville from Heiges Field House for its first PSAC Eastern Division win of the season.
The Raiders (3-23, 1-15 PSAC) held the Marauders (12-13, 8-8) to 39 percent (30-of-77) from the field and posted a 48.4 percent shooting clip (30-of-62) themselves while matching season highs with 53 rebounds, 16 assists and nine three-pointers.
"We've been chipping away and the guys have been working really hard and we really haven't had much to show for our efforts," first-year SU head coach
Chris Fite said. "I really feel like the team's been playing well over the last few weeks and they've been giving it their all, so it's satisfying to finally get a result and head into the offseason with a little bit of momentum."
All three of Shippensburg's wins this season have come against teams that have qualified for their conference postseason tournaments (Millersville is the PSAC East No. 5 seed, California (Pa.) is the PSAC West No. 6 seed and Chestnut Hill is the CACC South No. 4 seed).
SU's 92 points were its most since scoring 93 in a home win over Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 29, 2011 as all five starters reached double figures for the first time this season.
Sophomore
Jay Hardy led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-9 from long range, while sophomore
Joe Lococo and junior
Mark Wilmer each posted monster efforts with double-doubles.
Lococo flirted with a triple-double in the second half before settling for a line of 19 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and a season-high seven assists (he had five at halftime).
Wilmer again continued his impressive play with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and gathered a career-high and team season-high 17 rebounds – the most for a Raider in a single game in over five years (Derrick Graff had 19 in a home win vs. Bloomsburg on Feb. 18, 2009). The effort marks the fifth consecutive game in which Wilmer has matched or set a career high in rebounding.
Freshman
Abe Massaley added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists while freshman
Keelan Adams contributed a career-high 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting to complement five rebounds.
Shippensburg extended an early lead to as many as 10 points midway through the first half, and with a five-point lead with under seven minutes remaining, used a 14-3 run over a four-minute span – including three Hardy dunks, with the last off an alley-oop from Lococo – to open up a 16-point advantage with a 43-27 lead.
Millersville trimmed its deficit to seven points just two minutes into the second half but failed to get closer for the majority of the remainder of the half. The Marauders made a push in the final few minutes, however, as they cut a 10-point SU lead with 2:19 remaining to five points with 37 seconds left but the Raiders shot 6-of-8 from the free-throw stripe in the final minute.
