The Shippensburg University softball team went 3-0 this weekend to kick off its season at the Shaw Tournament with a 2-1 victory over North Greenville on Saturday and 5-1 and 9-6 victories over Virginia State and Mount Olive, respectively, on Sunday. Statistics are yet not available for the win over North Greenville.

A dominant pitching effort by junior Liz Parkins led the Raiders (3-0) to victory in Sunday's opener. Parkins gave up three hits and one run while striking out five in a complete game effort. Junior Makenzie Lynn pitched into the seventh inning in Game 2 while striking out six and giving up eight hits. Senior Emily Estep retired all three batters she faced in the seventh to earn the save.

Junior shortstop Taylor Weisman slugged SU to the Game 2 win, going 2-for-4 with five RBIs as her hits were a two-run double and a three-run home run.

Sophomore Briana Giovenco had a team-best four hits on the day, going 4-for-7 with three runs scored, while senior left fielder Hilary Lyons stole three bases.

The Raiders next play in two weeks when they travel to Clermont, Fla., for the Spring Games beginning March 8.

Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Virginia State 1

SU scored a run in the first inning despite not getting a hit when senior second baseman Rachel Shumway walked in a bases-loaded run (two batters hit by pitch, a walk and a fielder's choice). Junior right fielder Emmie Burke added a second run in the third with an RBI groundout.

After a Virginia State solo home run in the top of the sixth cut their deficit in half, the Raiders tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning beginning with four consecutive singles from sophomore Courtney Kane, Giovenco, Weisman and junior first baseman Jessie Trammell, who drove in Kane and Giovenco. Junior Maddie Justice then hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Weisman.

Game 2: Shippensburg 9, Mount Olive 6

SU answered back-to-back solo home runs by Mount Olive in the top of the second inning with six runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame with RBI singles from Lyons, Parkins and junior center fielder Tyler Thompson, a Giovenco RBI double to right center and a two-run Weisman double down the right field line.

Shippensburg scored all of its nine runs in just two innings as it extended a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning into a 9-4 lead after Weisman's three-run blast to center field that scored senior pinch runner Kirstin McClune and Giovenco, who singled to reach base.
