KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Double-doubles from sophomore
Stephanie Knauer and freshman
Morgan Griffith on Saturday afternoon helped propel the Shippensburg University women's basketball team to an 81-52 road win at Kutztown from Keystone Arena that completed the season sweep of the Golden Bears.
The Raiders (16-8, 10-4 PSAC East) won the rebounding battle by a 50-28 margin and scored 80 or more points for the fourth straight game and 15th time in 25 games this season.
SU held the Golden Bears (9-15, 6-8) – who clinched a berth in the PSAC playoffs by virtue of Lock Haven's loss at Millersville on Saturday – to 0-for-8 three-point shooting, marking the first time the Raiders have held an opponent without a three-pointer in nearly two years (it also held Kutztown to an 0-for-7 three-point effort on Feb. 25, 2012).
Knauer led all players with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Griffith made five of her six free-throw attempts and finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Shippensburg accounted for the game's three leading scorers as senior
Sarah Strybuc added 16 points, four assists and a season-high four steals. Sophomore
Caitlyn Deeter filled up the stat sheet with another impressive performance, recording nine points, five rebounds and setting a career high with a game-best six assists.
Freshman
Logan Snyder added nine points off the bench – including six in the first half – to go along with six rebounds.
The Raiders battled a slow start from the very beginning, when Kutztown's Alyssa Bonenberger grabbed the opening tip and found Nicole Donahue ahead of the pack for an easy lay-in bucket just a few seconds into the game. SU didn't grab its first lead until there was under six minutes remaining in the first half and later used an 8-0 run to take a 34-27 lead into the break.
SU continued the run into the second half where it broke the game open, out-scoring KU 17-6 in the first seven minutes of the frame and extending the run to 25-6 dating back to the 1:18 mark of the first half.
Shippensburg closes out the regular season on Wednesday evening with a 6 p.m. Senior Day tip vs. Millersville from Heiges Field House. Before the game, SU will honor its two seniors – Strybuc and
Lauren Barnett.
With a win against the Marauders and a West Chester loss at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, the Raiders would leap-frog the Golden Rams and earn the No. 2 seed in the PSAC East and a first-round bye for the conference playoffs. If WCU defeats ESU, the Raiders will be the No. 3 seed and host No. 6-seed Kutztown in the PSAC First Round next Sat., March 1.
